Mixer: The Ponys The Ponys are a really great Chicago band. Above you can see their cool stitched cloth carrying pouch for their 2004 mix. Their sound is so irresistible and timeless it has critics and fans alike struggling to namecheck all the stylistic reference points. But it is truly a case where the sum is greater than the parts because The Ponys may cop a classic move here or there but their take on it is unique and fresh. Mojo Magazine had this to say about their debut album, Laced With Romance: "The Ponys slather fuzztone warmth and poppy swirls of organ over stiff-backed post-punk, tranposing Joy Division to a time when the Stones released a single a month and garage bands actually practiced in garages. Singer-guitarist Jered (there are no surnames in this stable) dramatises his lovelorn fatalism with a slack-jawed wail worthy of Robert Smith, but the music is pure exuberance- check the Spector-sized beats punctuating Fall Inn, Looking Out a Mirror's manic bass propulsion or the rising psych tide which engulfs I'll Make you a Star." To put it another way - Thurston Moore and Byron Coley had this to say: "If you are not hip to their chuff, you are out of some loops, pal. Way out."
